About Medicare Plan N Supplemental Insurance

Medicare enrollees in Parts A and B may find that their healthcare costs are not completely covered under those policies. In that case, supplemental insurance is an option to keep total healthcare costs as low as possible for these beneficiaries. Some supplemental plans, such as Medigap Plans F and G, provide very comprehensive coverage, but also come with a higher price tag. One option for having this additional coverage, but with lower monthly premiums, is a Medicare N supplement plan. Medicare N provides higher levels of coverage than Medicare Plans K or L but maintains a lower monthly premium than F or G, making it an attractive option for those shopping for Medicare supplemental insurance plans.

Medicare N differs from other supplemental plans by only paying a percentage of total costs. Plan N is similar to the percentage plans K and L, but it pays a higher percentage and has a slightly higher monthly cost for those enrollees who wish to customize their coverage to their unique situation and needs. Medigap N includes basic benefits of full payment of Part A co-insurance plus an additional 365 days of coverage beyond the Medicare maximum. It also covers Part B co-insurance, with the notable exception of mandatory $20 copay for office visits and a $50 copay for emergency room visits. It pays for the first three pints of blood each year that are needed, as well as Part A co-insurance for hospice services.

In addition, Medicare N provides complete coverage for skilled nursing facility care, the Medicare Part A hospitalization deductible, and overseas travel emergency coverage. This differs from the percentage coverage for these services offered by Plans K and L. Instead, customers wanting Plan N pay a higher monthly premium for more substantial coverage in the case of needing this type of medical care. This way, customers needing this type of care, but less so other types, have the option of purchasing Medicare Plan N coverage to cover the services that they need or will need in the future.
